There may have been torrential rain showers, but that didn't dampen the mood for our summer fair. Thank you to everyone who made the fair possible, and all the helpers who relocated very quickly on Saturday morning! Another big thank you to anyone who came along and spent their money on cakes, cream teas, burgers, samosas, books, toys, games, plants and much more. Watch this space for the total raised!
What a busy week it's been at St. Matthew's. We have had so many visitors in school this week, sharing their jobs and experiences with the children. We've had several radio DJ's, a vet, paramedics, police officers, a judge, a barrister, a zookeeper, an Everton footballer (and past pupil!), some librarians, a doctor, an ice hockey player, a mental health trainer, a Leeds Rhinos team member, a civil engineer, a computer scientist, a mortgage advisor, a sales advisor, a medical engineer, a creative director and someone from the Extreme E racing team. Many of our visitors praised the children on their interesting and thoughtful questions, and we even had a few shout outs on the radio too! A big thank you to Mr Barlow for organising the week.
Our new Key Stage 2 playground woodland area, has now had a facelift, thanks to the funding provided by the SMART team. All the children across school have been given a guided tour and shown what the different areas are for. Feel free to pop round and have a look at school pick up times to see what a great outdoor learning resource this will be for our children.
We had a wonderful day celebrating the Coronation of King Charless III. We dressed in red, white and blue, had a special picnic in the playground and the sun came out just in time! In the afternoon, we had a special assembly to learn about the new King and Queen.
Well, it was a cold, wet and windy day for it, but everyone persevered during our sponsored run around the school field! Our Reception children were spurred on by completing their laps with their Year 6 buddies and despite the weather everyone had a great time. Thank you to all the parents and friends who came along to support the children. We raised an incredible £4986.41!
After a break of several years, we were able to hold our annual Somerton Poetry Awards, in memory of Mr Somerton. Each class winner, was invited to recite their poem at our final in front of the school and the judging panel. A big congratulations to all the children who learnt a poem and especially to our finalists.
We were contacted last year by the daughter of a lady called Mary Price. Mary was a resident at Dyneley House Care Home, just around the corner from our school, who sadly passed away last year. She had always enjoyed the visits from the children from St. Matthew's and because of this, had left the school some money in her will to be used for the school library. Our new books have been purchased and even include a dedication to her memory in the front of each book.
From Monday 13th March to Friday 17th March we celebrated 'Science Week'. Each year group had visitors to inspire us about the different areas of science including a doctor, an engineer, a planetarium and the Zoolab. Each class undertook their own experiments and investigations. Check out the photos of all our fun activities.
We had a great time once again celebrating World Book Day. Every class got the opportunity to visit our 'Big St. Matthew's Book Swap' meaning that every child went home with a book of their choice. We had a great variety of costumes and during assembly we heard from some of our teachers about their favourite book as a child. To finish the day off, we had a 'Story Time Teacher Swap' across the school.
Aanika from St. George's Crypt in Leeds, came to our assembly to tell us about the work of the charity with the city's homeless and vulnerable people. Our fundraising project this Lent, will be to raise money for this worthy cause.
