A Church School for the whole community

Collective Worship

Collective worship is a fundamental part of life at St Matthew’s.  This is a special time for the whole school community to come together to reflect and grow spiritually.  Its purpose is to nurture children’s understanding of Christian values such as love, respect, forgiveness, compassion and hope while also giving space for personal reflection and appreciation of other beliefs.

Through prayer, song, stories, and quiet thought, collective worship helps pupils to explore moral and spiritual questions, develop a sense of belonging and celebrate the diversity and achievements within this special school community.

Collective worship supports the school’s Christian foundation and encourages every child to flourish in both faith and in everyday life.  It is led by pupils, teaching staff and local clergy and provides many opportunities for us to invite parents to share in many occasions with us.  We have very strong links with St Matthew’s Church where we visit for services throughout the year, including St Matthew’s Day, Harvest, Christmas, Easter and a Leaver's Service.

All children take part in collective worship each day which reflects well on the school's inclusive approach. Parents may, however, withdraw their child(ren) from collective worship and any such intentions should be discussed with the Headteacher in the first instance.
