A Church School for the whole community

Welcome To Our Climate Curriculum Page

Climate curriculum

In collaboration with Global Learning Leeds (formerly Leeds DEC) we have written a climate curriculum that is embedded across school from early years to Year 6.

Climate action plan

We have developed a climate action plan for the year 2025-2026 which is split into four distinct areas:

  • Decarbonisation

  • Biodiversity

  • Adaptation and resilience

  • Climate curriculum

Global Gang

Global Gang is a club for children in Year 6 who care about making St Matthew's an eco-friendly school. We meet once a week on Wednesday lunchtimes and carry out various whole school projects. In the past couple of years, we have organised and judged the 'Get Creative for Climate Justice' event when the whole school creates an art exhibition in the school hall for our parents and carers. Our local MP has been in to view the artwork and several pieces of art have been sent to The Houses of Parliament in London and the COP conference in Dubai.

Global Gang have also developed the school grounds, planting wildflowers and adding bat and bird boxes. The gang regularly litter pick on the playground too.

Global Gang have changed the reward system across school by replacing plastic prizes with experiences such as sitting on a cushion for a week or having an extra playtime.

Global Gang have helped to increase the amount of materials we recycle in school to include coffee pods and batteries.

The children helped to organise Refugee week in June 2025 when the whole school created an art exhibition in the hall for parents to view.

Could we become a Zero carbon school…?

Year 5 are taking part in a zero carbon school challenge. They have worked in groups to come up with ideas and solutions that can help to make the school closer to zero carbon next year.  One group has looked at how we can cut down on electricity usage.  Another group has had the idea of a switch off day.  Another group wants to organise a swap shop to cut down on the need to buy new things.

Eco warriors

In our school we have two eco warriors in every class from Year 1 to Year 6. They meet once a week with Mr Barlow on Thursday lunchtimes to learn about the week's eco challenge. The warriors then deliver the challenge to their classes and children are encouraged to sign up to the website, complete the challenges and earn certificates and badges.

Eco-schools Green Flag Award

St. Matthew's already has the Bronze and Silver Eco-schools awards but Global Gang thinks we could go for the Green Flag Award.  What do you think?  If we go for it, we are going to need everyone's help.
