School Uniform

At St. Matthew’s CE Primary School, we believe that wearing a school uniform fosters a sense of pride, belonging, and equality among our pupils. Our uniform is simple, smart, and practical for everyday learning and play.


We appreciate your support in helping children come to school dressed appropriately and ready to learn.

Uniform Expectations

  • White polo shirt or shirt no logos

  • Optional St. Matthew’s school tie – if a school tie is worn, it should be pulled smartly up to the top shirt button.

  • Grey trousers, shorts, skirts or pinafores – no black trousers, shorts, skirts, leggings, joggers or jeans

  • Plain navy-blue sweatshirt, jumper or cardigan – round or v-neck, with or without the school logo (not black)

  • Black school shoes or plain black trainers – no designs or coloured soles (plain black only)

  • Plain grey, black or white socks, plain grey tights no patterns or black tights and long socks to be below the knee

  • Blue and white gingham summer dress – optional for warmer weather


All Pupils should come to school in weather-appropriate clothing (e.g. coats in winter, sun hats in summer).


PE and Sports Attire

  • Indoor PE:

    • White t-shirt/polo shirt

    • Navy shorts

    • Black pumps

  • Outdoor PE:

    • Plain navy tracksuit or plain navy leggings

    • Plain white t-shirt/polo shirt

    • Plain black trainers (with black soles and no logos or designs)


Please ensure all PE clothing is free from branding or logos — plain navy only.


Swimming Kit

  • One-piece swimming costume

  • Swimming trunks

  • All pupils: Towel


Appearance Expectations

To maintain high standards of presentation and safety, we ask that:

  • There are no extreme hairstyles, bright coloured hair, bright coloured hair extensions or large coloured hair accessories.

  • Whilst earrings are permitted in school, these should be small plain gold or plain silver studs for girls and boys. On PE days, earrings should be removed or covered before your child comes to school.  In addition, if your child is attending a sporting event, earring must be removed before they can participate.  Children may also wear a watch however Smart watches are not permitted.  No other jewellery should be worn to school.

  • Nail varnish is not permitted.


Labelling and Lost Property

Please clearly label every item of clothing, footwear and bags with your child’s full name. This helps us to return any lost property quickly.

Please note however that you are welcome to buy plain items from any high street retailer or supermarket. We do not require branded uniform for all items.
