Our Typical Year 2 Timetable

Key Information

  • Library day is Wednesday.

  • Children to come to school in PE kit on Fridays.

  • Reading books will be given out on a Friday and must be returned on a Monday.

  • Children to bring a water bottle and a healthy snack every day.

Communicating with your child's class teacher:

Our direct year group email is year2@stmatthewsleeds.co.uk. As both classes use this email, please make it clear in the subject line who the email is for (FAO Mrs Challinor/Mrs Gifford or Miss Stansfield).

Collecting your child at the end of the day:

We have now learned most parents'/carers' faces which is great for a speedy home time dismissal. If your child is being collected by another person, please ensure that your child's class teacher is aware of this in advance. The best way to do this is by contacting the school office. Due to safeguarding reasons, we cannot release a child to a person without prior instruction from the parent/carer.

Names in clothing:

Please ensure that your child's clothing is clearly labelled with their name so their clothing can be rightfully returned (should it be taken off).

Times tables

Last half term, Year 2 focused on the 10 times tables. This half term, we are focusing on the 2 times tables, and in the final half term, we will move on to the 5 times tables. Please use the following websites to support your child in developing their understanding and confidence with these multiplication facts.

Art

Year 2 pupils are developing their drawing skills by exploring tonal shading and texture, learning how to create light, dark and different surface effects through a range of marks. They are linking this to computing by investigating how digital images are made from pixels, using pointillism techniques to create their own pixel-inspired artwork.

Summer 1

Our current topic is: Where Do We Live?

Woodland Stories

We’ve had an incredible time creating our own woodland stories. We visited the KS2 woodland area to gather vocabulary and inspiration. After drafting, editing, and publishing our work, both classes returned to the woodland area to share their stories and celebrate their finished pieces.

World Book Day

Lots of fun was had by Year 2 on World Book Day. They enjoyed dressing up, celebrating books, and taking part in our annual book swap.

Previous learning:

Science Week

So much fun was had during Science Week! We enjoyed creating jungle-inspired outfits, learning about Olympians, carrying out exciting experiments, making paper aeroplanes, and planting seeds.

Sculpture workshop

We had so much fun learning about materials and exploring them to develop our Art skills with Rachel Craddock. This wonderful learning was also inspired by Michelle Reader and Nnena Kalu.
