At St. Matthew’s, we are passionate about developing a lifelong love of reading in all our children.
Over the past few years, we have successfully implemented the Little Wandle phonics programme and invested extensively in carefully matched reading books for our Reception to Year 2 pupils. We have also recently expanded our collection of age-appropriate, phonically decodable Little Wandle books for children aged 7 and above, ensuring that every child has access to books that support their reading journey.
As you may know, once a child has passed their phonics screening check and achieved a good level of fluency on our Phase 5 books in Year 2, they move onto our colour band system of choosing books from a book box. Many of these books are old, out dated and in some cases, boxes are seriously depleted. Therefore, our next exciting step is to revitalise the classroom bookshelves across Key Stage 2. We want to create vibrant, engaging reading spaces filled with high-quality books that children can browse, enjoy and take home to share with their families.
As part of this project, we are introducing our '100 Books to Read Before You Leave' challenge. Each class in Key Stage 2 will have a curated collection of 25 wonderful age- appropriate books to explore, giving every child the opportunity to experience a rich range of stories, characters, authors and genres during their time at primary school. We have created a list of books which cover fiction, non-fiction, graphic novels, classics and picture books.
To help make this vision a reality, we are asking for your support. School budgets are tight and ours is no exception! We have created an Amazon Wish List containing many of the books we would love to add to our classroom libraries. If you are able to, we would be incredibly grateful if you would consider purchasing a book from the list to donate to the school.
Every donated book, no matter how big or small, will help us build a reading culture that inspires curiosity, imagination and a genuine love of literature. Why not ask your child which book (or books) they would like to see in their upcoming class bookshelf.

Year 2 have also been included with their own wish list, for those readers who successfully complete the Little Wandle programme and are ready to move on.

Thank you, as always, for your continued support and generosity. Together, we can provide our children with a wonderful collection of books that will open doors to new worlds and foster a lifelong love of reading.
