Geography

Intent statement for Geography

We can be Geographers.

At St Matthew’s Primary School, we believe that Geography helps to provoke and provide answers to questions about the natural and human aspects of the world. Children are encouraged to develop a greater understanding and knowledge of the world, as well as their place in it.

We want to inspire in children:

  • a curiosity and fascination about the world and its environments
  • an understanding of different cultures, which will remain with them for the rest of their lives
  • an interest and understanding of diverse places and people, alongside key physical and human processes

Progression of skills and knowledge in Geography

To support our Geography learning we take the Year 4 children on a residential to Malham. Activities include guided walks to visit Malham cove and the Limestone pavement, Janet’s Foss and Gordale Scar and a GPS trail around the village. We discuss the different geographical features we see including springs, meanders and waterfalls.
